Railway tracks – corner of W Pender St and Taylor St

These old railway tracks are located in what used to be the central city hub. It was also the point that divided the Chinatown from the rest of the city. The Chinese railway workers made a significant contribution to the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and by the end of 1882, there were around 6,500 Chinese Canadians working on the railway out of the overall 9,000 railway workers. They were often the ones building through the most challenging and dangerous terrain. Not only was the railway system an important factor in the economic growth, but also played an important role in the development of public transportation as some of the unused tracks were repurposed as the tram lines.
